Imagine a world where you can get delicious food anywhere, anytime, any place almost instantly. That’s our goal.” Chef David Cramer prepares an herbivore and omnivore option each day for only $6 – and you can get it delivered for free! Last week, the delivery area expanded to include Downtown Oakland so I was invited to check it out. I tried last night since they deliver until 4am but, unfortunately, they were sold out at 11pm. After figuring out that their website works better on Chrome, I ordered both options for lunch today. The wait time was supposed to be 9 minutes, but it actually took about 20 minutes for the driver to arrive. I was waiting at the curb when he reached into a warming container in the back seat and handed me two plastic containers. Both portions were pretty generous, but the vegetarian dish turned out to be a lot more flavorful than the meat. The Farfalle pasta was tangy, salty and lightly dressed with Parmesan butter sauce, butternut squash and capers. The Pork Adobo Brochettes, on the other hand, overcooked in transit. They were dry and the brown rice-green lentil pilaf was bland. Still, there aren’t many places that serve $6 meals – fast food included. I would definitely order again, especially a dish that isn’t as easy to overcook (like the chicken thighs that sold out last night). SpoonRocket offers healthy, fresh food a good value. Plus, it’s super convenient.

The startup launched last summer and now delivers across the East Bay, including Berkeley. Even though SpoonRocket managed to raise $13.5 million from Y Combinator and other angel investors back in 2013, and went through a successful 2014 Series A funding round, that wasn’t enough.
